Bird's-Eye View Map of Kalispell, MT 1897

This Southwest-looking map of Kalispell features the Conrad Mansion, 6 churches, and The West Hotel, "The Only First Class Hotel in the City." Note the steamboats on Flathead Lake in the background and the rocks of present day Lone Pine Lookout.

The name Kalispell is a Salish word meaning "flat land above the lake". It was founded in 1891 by Charles Conrad and his team under the auspices of "The Kalispell Township Company," a popular method of marketing railroad towns of the day.

Kalispell is 31 miles (50 km) from Glacier National Park, and 7 miles (11 km) north of Flathead Lake. Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in the continental United States west of the Mississippi River.
