247 New England and the St. Lawrence Seaway

Construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway began in 1954 and was completed in 1959. This marked the establishment of a navigable transportation system of locks, canals, and channels that encompasses the St. Lawrence River and the five Great Lakes, extending from the Gulf of St. Lawrence on the Atlantic Ocean to the western end of Lake Superior. Named for the Saint Lawrence River, flowing from Lake Ontario to the Atlantic Ocean, St. Lawrence Seaway is a valuable waterway for American and Canadian trade. However, there is much more to the St. Lawrence Seaway than commerce; it’s a fine combination of beautiful scenery, shores of bustling neighborhoods and communities, rich coastal history and vast wilderness expanses beyond its shores. The Saint Lawrence Seaway allows for access to incredible sites from New England to Canada.
